How Patrick Found Healing + Life After Graduation at the Mission
Seattle's Union Gospel Mission - February 15 2026
You’re changing lives by showing you care
Patrick felt dead inside. Lost. He’d tried to get clean from addiction. But failed every time.
For as long as he could remember, Patrick had struggled to stay sober. “Pretty much all of my life, I was just like this functioning addict.”
Patrick held down handyman jobs. But beneath his functioning exterior, Patrick was in turmoil. “The Bible talks about this restless discontent. That’s where I found myself.”
Hardest of all, Patrick’s problems with heroin had placed him in prison. Again. And again.
Then, at his lowest, Patrick found himself living on the streets. “Homelessness in the cold weather was terrible. You’re alone, without family, and without purpose. It hurts.”
“I knew how to fix a lot of things,” Patrick admits. But he just couldn’t fix himself.
Finally, Patrick’s corrections officer gave him a choice: “You can go back to jail. Or you can come up with a plan that includes treatment.” That’s when Patrick reached out to a friend at Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission.
Patrick was the first to admit that entering the Men’s Recovery Program initially was his card to get out of jail. However, once at the Mission, Patrick discovered all that his life was missing.
“The Mission experience was like a family. There were even special meals on holidays.”
FINDING HEALING
Most importantly, Patrick found the root of his drug dependency — and began to heal. “The problem was my broken relationships with God and with people.”
Patrick came to realize so much of the pain he’d numbed was from his distant, disciplinary father.
“My dad was only around to discipline. Never for father-son moments. When you’re hurt in relationships, it makes you want to isolate. But isolation is the worst thing you can do.”
BUILDING COMMUNITY AT THE MISSION
It’s for this reason that the Mission’s aftercare program — built around connection and community — makes such a difference.
“At the Mission, you learn that accountability is good and God is directing us into it.”
Today, Patrick is clean and sober. And he has a new life — a full life. “My life is very busy. Once a week, I meet with my sponsor. We talk about our relationships with God and with people. I do a life group at my church and mentor men.”
Best of all, Patrick reconnected with his high school sweetheart and is now married. He spends holidays with a family of his very own.
“We have a big table people gather around. My wife, my stepdaughter, her husband, and their two kids, who’re my little grandbabies. It’s the new family God has given me. They’re a blessing.”
LIFE AFTER GRADUATION
Have you ever wondered what life for our graduates looks like after Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission? Once our guests graduate from our long-term recovery program, their life looks entirely different.
-
Instead of isolated — program graduates are connected to a loving, supportive lifelong community.
-
Instead of hopeless — program graduates are getting job skills training, interning, and continuing their education to chase after their dreams.
-
Instead of homeless — program graduates have housing support, relapse prevention, and help through counseling to overcome any obstacles.
Thank you for providing support that’s giving a new life — and life to the full!
President's message
FROM DEATH TO LIFE
Years lost to homelessness . . . Dreams that have died . . . Addiction destroying lives . . . Everywhere you look on our streets, you see signs of how “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.”
But Jesus says:
“...I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
JOHN 10:10 NIV
Jesus is the way that leads to full life!
An empty stomach often brings our homeless neighbors in off the streets. But that’s just the start. Once their needs are met and their stomach is filled, a man or woman begins finding hope to walk toward a new life.
They start reclaiming lost years. Resurrecting dreams that had died. They defeat addictions.
This Easter season, your support has the power to bring what’s dead back to life. Because, in Christ, loss is never where our stories end!
When you provide a meal, you revive hope. Thank you for giving to make a new, full life possible.
— Scott Chin, President
